Los Angeles Bicycle Accident Attorney

Fighting for Injured Cyclists in Los Angeles

Bicycling is one of the most eco-friendly and healthy ways to get around Los Angeles, but it can also be one of the most dangerous. Despite laws requiring motorists to share the road, many drivers act carelessly, putting cyclists at risk. When a car, truck, or rideshare driver collides with a bicyclist, the cyclist often suffers catastrophic injuries while the motorist walks away unharmed.

At Carpenter & Zuckerman, our Los Angeles bicycle accident attorneys have been standing up for injured cyclists for nearly 30 years. We know the devastating impact these crashes can have—physically, emotionally, and financially—and we are committed to helping victims recover maximum compensation. With over $3 billion recovered in settlements and verdicts for injury victims, our trial-tested lawyers have the skill, resources, and determination to take on negligent drivers and the insurance companies that back them.

If you’ve been injured in a bicycle accident, contact Carpenter & Zuckerman today at (888) 484-2033 for a free consultation. You pay no fees unless we win your case.

Bicycle Laws in California

California has enacted several laws designed to protect bicyclists and regulate how drivers and cyclists share the road. Understanding these rules can be important when determining fault after a crash.

One of the most important safety rules is the “Three Feet for Safety Act.” This law requires drivers passing a cyclist to leave at least three feet of space between the vehicle and the bicycle. If a driver cannot provide that distance, they must slow down and only pass when it is safe to do so.

Other key California bicycle laws include:

  • Equal rights and responsibilities: Cyclists generally have the same rights and duties as drivers under traffic laws.
  • Riding position: When traveling slower than traffic, bicyclists should ride as close as practical to the right side of the roadway unless conditions make it unsafe.
  • Bike lane use: When a designated bicycle lane is present, cyclists traveling slower than traffic are generally required to use it unless passing, turning, or avoiding hazards.
  • Vehicle restrictions: Drivers are typically prohibited from driving in bicycle lanes except when parking, entering, or preparing for a turn.

When drivers ignore these rules—such as by passing too closely or blocking bike lanes—they may be liable for injuries resulting from a bicycle accident.

Common Causes of Bicycle Accidents in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is one of the busiest traffic cities in the country, and cyclists often find themselves navigating congested roads alongside impatient drivers. While every accident is unique, some of the most common causes of bicycle accidents include:

  • Right-Turn Collisions: Motorists making right turns often fail to check for cyclists riding alongside them, causing devastating crashes.
  • Left Cross Accidents: When a driver turns left across an intersection without noticing a cyclist traveling straight through, the results can be catastrophic.
  • Stop Sign Violations: Many drivers run stop signs or roll through intersections without yielding to cyclists who have the right of way.
  • Dooring Accidents: Under California law, drivers must check for cyclists before opening a car door. Unfortunately, many fail to do so, causing cyclists to crash into suddenly opened doors.
  • Rear-End Collisions: Even at low speeds, a rear-end collision can throw a cyclist off their bike, leading to severe injuries.

No matter the cause, if a driver’s negligence led to your injuries, you have the right to hold them accountable through a personal injury claim.

Serious Injuries From Bicycle Accidents

Cyclists have little protection when struck by a motor vehicle, making them vulnerable to catastrophic injuries. Some of the most common injuries we see in Los Angeles bicycle accident cases include:

  • Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs)
  • Spinal cord injuries and paralysis
  • Broken bones and fractures
  • Internal bleeding and organ damage
  • Severe road rash and lacerations
  • Permanent scarring or disfigurement

These injuries often require extensive medical treatment, long recovery times, and in some cases, lifelong care. At Carpenter & Zuckerman, we fight for full and fair compensation to cover medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and future rehabilitation costs.
