Eaton Fire Lawsuits

Representing Altadena and Pasadena Families After the Eaton Fire

Carpenter & Zuckerman is investigating potential claims for residents and business owners who lost homes, property, or loved ones in the January 2025 Eaton Fire. Lawsuits and federal filings focus heavily on Southern California Edison’s electrical equipment as a potential cause of the blaze that devastated Altadena and Pasadena.

If the fire damaged or destroyed your property, injured you, or took the life of someone you love, you may be entitled to compensation from Edison or other responsible parties, even if you have already received a payment from your insurance company.

  • More than $3 billion recovered for our clients
  • Over 30 years taking on major corporations
  • Award-winning, trial-tested attorneys
  • No legal fees unless we recover compensation for you

The Eaton Fire's Devastation

Driven by hurricane-force Santa Ana winds through bone-dry terrain, the Eaton Fire tore through Altadena and Pasadena beginning the evening of January 7, 2025. Before it was contained, the fire burned more than 14,000 acres, destroyed roughly 9,400 structures, damaged more than 1,000 others, and killed 19 people, ranking among the most destructive and deadliest wildfires in California history.

Homes, businesses, schools, churches, and cultural landmarks were reduced to ash within hours. Many properties left standing remain uninhabitable today because of smoke damage and toxic contamination, a loss that is easy to overlook but very real for the families who cannot return.

What Caused the Eaton Fire

Lawsuits and federal filings focus heavily on Southern California Edison’s electrical equipment near Eaton Canyon. Video evidence appeared to show flashes or arcing near SCE transmission equipment around the time the fire began, and SCE reported electrical activity on its system as investigators examined whether utility equipment played a role.

One theory being investigated involves an idle transmission line that may have become energized during extreme wind conditions. Edison has acknowledged that circumstantial evidence suggests its equipment could have been associated with the fire’s ignition, though Cal Fire and county fire officials have not released a final official cause.

The lawsuits allege the disaster was preventable and fault Edison for failing to maintain aging equipment, address known risks, and de-energize power lines despite dangerous fire weather.

How Carpenter & Zuckerman Can Help

Wildfire cases involve several legal avenues, and more than one may apply to your situation. We can help you pursue:

  • Inverse condemnation. California law may allow property owners to recover for damage caused by utility equipment used for a public purpose without proving ordinary negligence.
  • Negligence claims. Separate claims may hold the utility responsible for failing to maintain its equipment, de-energize lines, or manage vegetation ahead of dangerous winds.
  • Personal injury and wrongful death. Compensation for those who were hurt and for families who lost a loved one in the fire.
  • Insurance and underinsurance claims. Many homeowners find their policies fall far short of the cost to rebuild. We can pursue the difference from at-fault parties and address claims that were wrongly delayed, denied, or underpaid.

Before You Accept a Payment From the Utility

After the fire, Southern California Edison opened a voluntary program offering direct payments to victims who agree not to sue. These offers can look appealing when you are facing urgent costs but accepting one may mean giving up the right to pursue the full value of your losses. Before you sign anything or accept a payment from the utility or an insurer, have a lawyer review the offer against what your claim may be worth. We will do that at no cost.

Do I Have a Case?

You do not need to have all the answers before reaching out. You may be able to recover if the Eaton Fire caused you to suffer:

  • Destruction of or damage to your home, rental, or business
  • Smoke, soot, or toxic contamination that left your property unsafe to occupy
  • Physical injuries, or the loss of a loved one
  • Evacuation, temporary housing, and relocation costs
  • Lost income or business interruption
  • Emotional distress and other losses tied to the fire

Even if you carried insurance, or you are unsure whether your losses qualify, contact us and we will review your situation at no cost.

How Long You Have to File

Wildfire claims come with filing deadlines, and they are not all the same. Some claims, particularly those involving public agencies, carry far shorter windows than a standard injury or property claim. Because the deadline depends on who is responsible and the nature of your losses, the safest step is to speak with a lawyer as soon as possible so you do not lose the chance to recover.
